A superb, large-scale winter landscape by American painter Carl Wuermer, known for his finely rendered rural scenes and meticulous handling of atmosphere and natural light. December Afternoon presents a quiet snow-covered road leading toward a distant New England village, with a church steeple rising above clustered rooftops. The composition is framed by birch trees, foreground shrubs, and deep evergreens, while rolling violet-blue hills recede into the horizon under a luminous winter sky.

Artist Note:

Born in Munich, Germany, Wuermer studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Art Students League. He had a series of one-man shows at Grand Cenrtal Art Galleries throughout the 1920's and 30's. He resided in Woodstock and painted the local landscape at various times of the season.
