Brysons, Edinburgh Fine Carved Fusee Dial Clock
Circa 1860-1880
Brysons, Edinburgh — A Fine Victorian Carved Mahogany Eight-Day Fusee Wall Clock, circa 1860–1880
The substantial carved mahogany case enclosing a signed painted Roman dial with blued-steel hands, the timepiece movement of single-fusee construction, the richly modeled foliate case characteristic of the more elaborate domestic clocks supplied by the celebrated Edinburgh firm of Brysons.
One potentially important point is the “BRYSONS / EDINBURGH” signature. The firm evolved from Robert Bryson's individual practice into the family concern associated with his sons, so the plural signature sits comfortably with the mid- to later-19th-century period. A surviving Brysons-signed bell at Dalbeattie is dated 1868, and Aberdeen municipal clock bells bearing the firm's name date from 1869–70, independently confirming use of the “Brysons Edinburgh” style during precisely the period that stylistically fits your clock.
